INTERNATIONAL PLAYWRITING FINDS A NEW HOME IN AN OLD VENUE
Griffin Theatre Company dedicates itself to the nurture, presentation
and promotion of outstanding Australian playwriting. Based at the SBW Stables
Theatre, Griffin has been an engine-room for theatrical discovery and ingenuity
for nearly thirty years, offering exhilarating productions that promote
and reflect the diversity of Australia 's playwriting culture.
However, in recent years, Griffin has also played a prominent role (through
Griffin Stablemates) in supporting independent companies that share our
enthusiasm for bringing new writing for the stage to national attention.
Now, in 2009, Griffin aims to put its Australian work in a global context,
and extend its support for the independent sector with the launch of Griffin
Independent.
What is Griffin Independent?
Griffin Independent is an annual season of 5-6 new international plays,
presented by some of the country's most exciting artists and independent
theatre companies.
Running in parallel to Griffin 's own mainstage season of new Australian plays,
Griffin Independent will become Sydney 's gateway for new international playwriting.
Why Griffin Independent?
Designed to support a vibrant independent theatre culture, Griffin Independent
will make the SBW Stables Theatre Sydney's most significant venue for contemporary
playwriting.
By promoting a creative dialogue between playwrights from Australia and
the rest of the world, it will give both artists and audience members a
chance to understand themselves as part of a global community, not just
a national one.
Griffin Independent will provide independent artists and producers with
substantive artistic and production counsel, as well as additional marketing,
publicity and technical assistance.
By offering increased support and a creative context, Griffin Independent
aims to improve the cross-fertilisation between mainstage and independent
productions - creating a better environment for artists and audiences alike.
