merelyplayers' Creative Industry Night #6 happened on Monday, 30th May 2005, at Sydney's famous ArtHouse Hotel. As with all our past Creative Industry Nights, it was a night of variety: entertainment and news.
Film-maker and actor, John Haly of Halyucinations, reviews the night's proceedings, along with images by Mike Kery...
Stepping out into the early evening cityscape, I was acutely aware of film project work demanding my attention - that was competing with one of merelyplayers' Creative Industry evenings. While I have been to every one of these evenings, which host Bryan Cutts has put on, and enjoyed them I confess, but .. but then again there is always something yet to do, and that is life.
So I went down to the ArtHouse Hotel, or should one say "up to", given it is in the Attic Bar. Of course, I ran into Script-writer and Actor friends as I expected; and of course, the social intercourse was enlightening and entertaining. I thought I might leave early, though. there were after all things to do. The acts commenced with a young lady, Lisa Maria, and her small band singing with a lovely voice: I loved her rendition of the old classic song, "Summertime". Her lyrical voice lulled me into a state of complacent forgetfulness. "What was it I had to do?"

Creative Industry
Night #6
Then a fellow named Dexter Moore and his guitar stepped up and rocked out a very different style of rhythm. Startling me out of complacency, his music and voice got the feet tapping. A very versatile guitarist with a method of playing that is versatile enough in his creation of sound variations, that one can be excused for not believing there is only one instrument playing.
Then Bryan took a break (dangerous because it was my chance to depart), but the lively conversation about the singers was interesting, and Mr Anderson was sitting at the Bar - so I thought I would stay a little while longer. Bryan introduced Angry Anderson to the gathered throng and started him off about his history as an artist and "what it is that keeps (him, Angry) going?" . "the secrets of what it is that keeps an artist motivated, active and "in the game".
Mr Anderson would quite frequently get off topic, I began to notice. But his meanderings were by no means uninteresting. Then he would suddenly realise he'd travelled further afield and ask, "...what was that question again?". At which point he would finish his answer. In fact one of his meanderings took us to his motivations for his well-known activism, for which his obvious passion was getting the better of him .. and us. He spoke of his childhood, youth and diversions that took him to darker places. |
One of the audience's number, asked him about any misgivings over his past, to where he is today. Mr Anderson took a balanced and very holistic approach, saying all of who he was had led him to where he is today: and while in his later years he may think differently to the way he did when he was younger, he would do it all again. He felt in essence complete in who he was, faults and all. I thought his place in life and as an artist, was one rather complete; and should serve as an inspiration to those of us who listened.

When Bryan eventually wrapped up the evening, some of us gathered around to thank Angry for his contribution. When I had his attention, I looked him in the eye, shook him by the hand and said "Thank you Mr Anderson for your contribution to this evening, and thank you for the contribution tonight has made to myself." He laughed, and replied, "A policeman once told me that the only people you call Mister are policemen and teachers . The policeman was arresting me at the time." I retorted, "Well I suspect, perchance, that you easily fall into one of those categories." Mr Anderson leaned forward and hugged me with a smile on his face.
I networked a little more with some other Actors, before once again stepping out into the late evening cityscape. There were things to do and well .. Tomorrow was another day after all. Thank you Bryan for yet another entertaining and enriching industry night. |
