Niki Shepherd

Niki began her professional dance career in classical Indian and interpretive contemporary dance in 1992. She established her own dance school 'Shivayah' in 1997 teaching Kuchipudi, contemporary dance and nattuvanggam (Indian vocal percussion). She has received financial assistance from the ACT through its Cultural Council, several residency support programs from the Australian Choreographic Centre and studied Indian dance at the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai on a professional development grant from the Australia Council.

image: portrait of Niki Shepherd in traditional dance costume and poseNiki's performances include Siva -the cosmic dancer, Parijatham, Chandalika, Yaathra - the journey and Relations with Padma Menon, The Divine Flautist - Rhythms of Mirage , Aarti - the eternal flame , Shakti - the goddess , The Serpent Woman and Nitya Sumangali - the Temple Dancer with Anandavilli's Lingalayam Dance Company.

Her own works include Anjali , Of the dance and Chaitanja - lighting up the dance , Inside Dancing in Artistories, Speaking of Winged Feet and In her own flame .

Niki's most recent production MADHU Sweet Diveristy celebrated her expertise in traditional and contemporary dance.
